It's been a while since we've heard anything from the SciFi folks about the Caprica prequel. Ron Moore last said that the project was put on hold and regrettably informed the fans that its chances for getting picked up lessened with each passing day.

From out of nowhere, SciFi just broke news that 8 webisodes (similar to the previous 3 minute shorts filmed last season) were filmed in conjunction with the Pegasus movie. Gateworld picked up the news; here's the juicy bits from their article:

As fans of Battlestar Galatica get ready for the November 24 premiere of the telemovie "Razor" -- which will delve into the backstory of the Battlestar Pegasus, her crew, and Admiral Cain (Michelle Forbes) -- the network has another surprise. The movie will be preceded by an 8-week series of "mini-sodes."

Filmed in conjunction with "Razor," the two- to three-minute installments will air weekly in primetime on SCI FI Channel, and then be available online at SCIFI.com. The promotional shorts will premiere in October.

Written by Michael Taylor and directed by Wayne Rose and Felix Alcala, "these shorts will provide a sneak peek into the original Cylon War, when a young pilot named William Adama (Nico Cortez) discovers a dangerous Cylon weapon that will come back to haunt him and his crew 40 years later," SCI FI revealed. They will also be included in the DVD release of "Razor."

I don't know about you guys, but I think this is amazing news! I really like the ideas presented so far. And, optimistically speaking, if this batch of webisodes proves successful perhaps it might push the network to reconsider the original pilot. Regardless, at least we get something interesting!

Caprica Pilot Not Picked Up

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Ron Moore recently dropped this info during an interview with TVWeek.com:

TVWeek: What is the likelihood of the "Caprica" prequel series at this point?
Mr. Moore: Still in development. One that caught my eye was a show called "Guilty Pleasures" in which he teams up with partner-in-crime Ron Moore, also of Battlestar fame. You should read the entire article; it thankfully proves that these guys are going to be influencing the television world for some time.

Speaking of Battlestar Galactica, we viewers have reached the last two episodes of season three. While the quality of this season has been a roller coaster of sorts, I'm confident these last episodes (particularly "The Son Also Rises") are returning the show to top form.

On BSG, a new character has revealed that he knew and mentored under Joesph Adama, who will play the lead character on the Caprica prequel. It is interesting because we are beginning to see how different this man was compared to his son, Bill Adama. Surely the writers were aware of the pilot and the descriptions they give us now will match the young lawyer who fights against the Cylons.

Possible Spoilers for Telemovie

SyFy Portal has discovered several spoilers regarding the telemovie that is scheduled to film in spring/summer of this year. I imagine that news regarding the confirmation or deconfirmation or whatever you want to call it should break soon.

I did just finish watching the latest Battlestar Galactica episode entitled "The Woman King." I'll keep this short but this episode was in a word... awful! I'm reminded of the hideous "Black Market" when I think about how ridiculously terrible this episode transpired to be. Gods... why can't Helo ever be wrong about anything on this show! What happened to letting us, the viewers, look at the problems presented on the show from varied perspectives while blurring the line between right and wrong? Instead we get this one-sided drivel. There is no excuse; the writers are better than this. I haven't really enjoyed a single episode of 3.5 yet. And, after seeing the previews to next week's "douse of an ep," I think that sad tradition might continue.

Come on, Galactica crew, give me some compelling TV! In the recent articles from iF Magazine and the Chicago Tribune, SciFi vice president Dave Howe gave us a very important piece of information regarding the status of our dear little prequel:

The announced spinoff, Caprica, has also not been picked up officially yet; some speculate that the DVD may somehow introduce a backstory for the previously announced spinoff mythology, although Moore and Eick seem to be vaguely indicating that this is not the case. SciFi's Howe says that Caprica's fate will be decided in February along with other shows currently in development.

This source of this article can be found here. I wrapped up school (which means I graduated, suckers!) and so many other more silly things delayed me from posting. I promise (really, really hard) to not let this happen again. In the last month or so a lot of exciting things have taken place regarding the show.
So without further ado...

Date: December 28th
Geek Monthly monthly reports that SciFi Channel is considering shooting a direct-to-video Battlestar movie! This news comes despite lower ratings the series has incurred from Season Two to Season Three. It is also hinted the show may have a tie-in with the Caprica prequel while not fudging with the continuity of the original series.
----------

Date: January 2nd
One of my favorite news sites, SyFy Portal, drops a brick-load of good news (along with a tablespoon of bad). The good stuff is that BSG is getting a fourth season! But SciFi would have to be braindead to pull the plug on Battlestar, as it is their most critically acclaimed show. And even though the ratings could be a tad better, it's still bringing them some bank. Now on with the bad news: a source at SciFi told the Portal that the Caprica pilot is very much like a screaming infant, and that anybody expecting it to get off the bottle and onto solid food by '08 is absolutely crazy! OK, so that is not exactly want he said. But this is a rumor anyways, so why not embellish a little?
----------

Date January 8th
Ron Moore and David Eick, the executive producers of BSG, talk more about the direct-to-dvd movie that films in April. There's some stuff about Starbuck and it is all very spoily (that cannot really be a word).
----------

Date: January 9th
Good 'ole Variety informs the world that NBC has a new VP of cable programming, Richard Rothstein. Previously, he was a supervising producer for America's Next Top Model. Boo! But now he's overseer of the development of Caprica. Yay!
----------

OK, I believe that is most of the big stories. If anything else surfaces I'll be sure to post it and whatnot. And if you, the reader, has anything important to add let me know.

I have been watching the latest episodes of Galactica season 3.5123 (whatever they're going to box the DVDs as) and I wish I could say that I'm liking it. In my opinion (never sure why I have to write that as I obviously am not writing from someone else's) the show has really faltered with its recent storylines. Here's to hoping that things get better.

I'm also working on a podcast project with my good friend and philosofizer Jarrett Heintz. It will be mostly BSG talk and other things. I think we going to kick it off fairly soon. If it's not too terrible shameless, I might post a link to it here. Anyways, here's to some more Cap. news (raises glass)!

Scripts arive at SCIFI

The New York Post recently confirmed that the first scripts for the Galactica spinoff have arrived. Here's a snippet of the SYFYPortal article:

October 30 2006) - SciFi Channel isn't all talk when it comes to "Battlestar Galacitca," and that includes its proposed spinoff, "Caprica." The New York Post is reporting that the first scripts have arrived on the desks of the network cable officials this week presenting a story that is not based in space, or really even a lot of action. It's more or less a new look into the origin of the Cylons.

Click here to read the entire article. It's more of the same stuff we already know: the show is more drama, more family, less sci-fi, kinda like "Dallas in space," etc. Here's to hoping (raises glass) that things pick up a bit more after this news. Otherwise I'm going to make a banner for this site with tumbleweed on it.

More from Moore

Despite my terrible pun, Mr. BSG Reimagined himself found some time to do a quick Q&A with CHUD. The bulk of the conversation is Season 3 BSG related, but he does get asked a few questions about the little show that could, Caprica:

What's the status of the spin-off?

Moore: It's in development. We've done a couple of drafts of the script and we're waiting to see if SciFi is going to give it the greenlight.

I've heard that this will be a soapier show than Battlestar.

Moore: It's very different from Galactica. It's not action adventure, it's planet-bound. It's about a couple of families and politics and corporate intrigue. It's about the creation of the Cylons, in essence, and it's fifty years before the events of Battlestar Galactica on the planet Caprica. It's a very different show - we didn't want to spin off the show into another war series about another Battlestar, about another group of survivors. We wanted to push the bounds of what science fiction is. No one has really tried to do the science fiction equivalent of the prime time soap. I don't know that it'll be as serialized as a prime time soap, but I'm sure there will be continuing elements. The feel of it will be different from the traditional action/adventure sci-fi show.

I imagine it'll shed some light on current events and characters on Galactica.

Moore: Sure. Absolutely.

I am confident that once the pilot is given the thumbs-up, meatier material will surface. Until then enjoy the PR speak of executives telling us the same thing over and over again about Caprica, using clever rewording.

Caprica Pilot Too Dark?

USA President Bonnie Hammer slipped some info about Caprica in a recent article. She said that the pilot for the show is being reworked to produce a lighter tone. She also hints that late 2007 could be the timeframe in which we finally see the project.

Ms. Hammer said the show's planned spinoff "Caprica" is still in development, with a recent pilot script being reworked to have a slightly lighter tone. If all goes well, a fourth-quarter 2007 debut is possible, she said.

I had hoped that issues with the pilot would have been ironed out by now. On the bright side, at least the show is still a work in progress.

I urge BSG fans to check out the webisodes on the main Galactica page. But this series is not directly related to Battlestar Galactica. Paul Campbell, who played the late Billy on BSG, left his gig on Galactica to pursue a lead in another show. Unfortunatley, said show did not make it past the pilot stage and, like so many other potentials, ended up in the scrapheap. iF magazine has written a story about the show, Nobody's Watching, and it's life-after-death success on the Internet. Read the snipet below, or check out the entire article for yourself:

Normally when a pilot fails that's where the story ends. However, for SCRUBS creator Bill Lawrence and his new show NOBODY'S WATCHING, that was just the beginning. Somewhere along the lines the pilot made it onto the webs biggest video site Youtube.com. Split into three segments, people were able to watch the entire first episode. Similar to the resurrection of Fox's FAMILY GUY, the sheer number of viewers, an estimated 400,000 as of this writing, has caught the attention of NBC Entertainment President Kevin Reilly.

"I'd like to announce that we are continuing down a somewhat unique development path with... NOBODY'S WATCHING," says Reilly. "The show will continue to produce new webisodes focusing on the two hapless stars [Derek and Will Taran Killam and Paul Campbell respectively] while they bounce around Hollywood."

According to Reilly, during this time, Lawrence and co-creator Neil Goldman will work on scripts "with the intention of producing an on-air primetime series for NBC."

Thanks to the editor of iFMagazine for the heads-up! If I get some spare time over the weekend, I'll direct link these videos to the blog. I personally have not watched the pilot but will do so very soon.

Battlestar Galactica - Gag Reel Start

Here's a little video that I found while searching for Caprica info. But really, that's in such an embryonic stage that it hasn't pulled us away. I mean, we should be so lucky to be sitting here going, "Gee, what do we do today, Caprica or Galactica?" It's not at that stage yet. Right now, it's just a script that none of us have even read yet because it's being written.

NP: It's something that will take place in the past, right?

DE: Yes. Exactly. It takes place about 50 years ago. It's in the Galactica universe, only 50 years before the events of Battlestar.

NP: Will we see any familiar characters, then?

DE: No. At least, not for the most part.

NP: Will we see Cylons like we know them now?

DE: It is about the birth of the artificial intelligence technology that will one day lead to the Cylon race. So on that level, it deals with the Cylons. But certainly not in the same way that we deal with them on our show.

NP: Is there anything more you can say?

DE: The script is still being written.

This is nothing really new to bring to the table. Based off of previous reports we knew that the script is still being developed. But yay for SOMETHING!

Kinda... Sorta News?

As you can tell, news of the Caprica spinoff series has been a little dry as of late. The only "news" I can report (and this is stretching it a bit) is that Mrs. Moore, via the Sci Fi boards, has reported that Ron Moore has the script and is going over it currently. She also informs the fans that this whole process might take a year or so (not surprisingly). And yes, it really is Ron M's wife; she started posting on the Sci Fi boards a while back.

Rohmaan:This so called "caprica" it has had no updates about it in 6 months has no cast info a paper thin plot this plot looks like a plot for a soap opera on ABC.

MrsRon:They are working on the scripts. It takes some time before a show gets on the air. It might be another year before it is finished.

So... if you are interested in reading the thread click here (MrsRon picks up on page 2). And while you are/are not doing this, I'll be hanging my head in shame and desperately looking for some meaty news-worthy material.

Hang in there folks!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://capricareport.blogspot.com/2006/07/kinda-sorta-news.html' title='Kinda... The two gentlemen were attending a screening at the Museum of Television and Radio in New York.

From Ron Moore:

"The prequel series called Caprica takes place about 50 years before the events of Battlestar Galactica, and for those of you who really know the mythology, it's takes place even before the original Cylon War," explained Moore. "It's a family drama and it's about the creation of the first Cylons and how that took place and why they were created and who were the people behind it. And it takes place on Caprica, on that world."

From David Eick:

"And it's all the corporations involved in struggling how to find the best way for this artificial intelligence to realize itself," says Eick. "And so you have a lot of conflict between the corporate barons and the scientists and the dreamers, who are all looking upon this thing really as a great breakthrough. There was a great piece in the LA Times yesterday about nanotechnology, and how terrifying it really is because we known so little about it and we're already starting to use it. And so it sort of follows that principle of stumbling upon some technological advance, some epiphany that you start putting to use even before you quite understand what it is or what it might do."

You can read the article right here. Most importantly it says that Remi Aubuchon will be submitting the Caprica script in about 2 weeks. Things seem to be progressing nicely!

Moore talks Caprica

Mr. Moore has finally broken silence regarding the new series. He adds more weight to Remi Aubuchon's previous remarks by reiterating that Caprica is striving to be completely different from Battlestar Galactica. You can read the snippet article from the Great Link right here or wait until the real article prints in the July issue of SFX magazine. Here are the Caprica bits of information from the man himself:

"It's a different kind of show. More of a drama. It's corporate intrigue and interfamily politics. . .there are rival companies that are trying to develop the same technology. The government plays a role in trying to sort of get certain military aspects of the technology in place. It's all coloured by the fact that we know none of this is going to come to a good end. This is a doomsday scenario that we know is leading to something really, really bad, that you're watching unfold before your eyes."

". . .the interesting thing is that in this stage in Caprican history, they're more advanced than the people we see on Galactica, because part of the mythos of the show is that it was a result of the Cylon War that made the [citizens of the Colonies] take a large step back from the technology they had developed. So [despite the fact that the show takes place 50 years before Battlestar Galactica], the society in Caprica will look more modern that Galactica's."

"[The show] will take place in a SF Universe where space travel is quite common and where the technology is such that houses clean themselves. It's a futuristic society on the verge of a major breakthrough in artificial intelligence. . . it's not an action-adventure show and it wasn't set up to become one. We're dedicated to making it a character drama."

Prequels are dangerous territory. Just look at the Star Wars prequels. Many fans are split down the middle regarding whether or not the new films were decent enough to bear the Star War name. Will the same be said of Caprica, in comparison to Battlestar Galactica? I think that distancing Caprica from the re-imagined Galactica could prove a very smart move, as long as this show can truly stand on its own. Only time will tell.

First Look at Galactica Spinoff!

It's always a pleasure to see some fan-based humor injected into the Battlestar universe. In the Q&A session, Mr. Eick spills more information about the upcoming BSG season 3, the Caprica spin-off, and how he plans to handle the extra workload. Here's a snippet of the interview, with portions related to you-know-what:

Ausiello: What's the latest on the Caprica spin-off?

Eick: It's in the very earliest embryonic stages. We're now working on the outline with Remi Aubuchon, who's the writer. We're going to be submitting the document to the network in the next week or so.

Ausiello: Fans are worried that your attention will be pulled away from the original and it'll suffer.

Eick: I think the difference this time is that we have a partner in Remi, who's going to be taking the lead with the new project. And the new project, at this point, is in the very earliest stages. Ron [Moore] and I [aren't] approaching Caprica like we approached Galactica, which is to say it was just the two of us. We're deeply involved with Caprica, and we're very enthusiastic and thrilled with the opportunity, but when it comes to the detail work of pounding out the script, there's a third partner involved who's at the helm. And that, I think, is the job that tends to be the one that creates the distractions and dilutes a person's attention and focus. So in this particular case we don't have that problem.

Ausiello: Has Sci Fi ordered a pilot, or is it just a script?

Eick: Right now it's a script. We'll probably know if it's a pilot around July.

There you have it. You can read the full interview at the TV Guide blog website. There are a few spoilers regarding events in the third season of Galactica in the article so please read at your own risk!

Producer Spills More Details

Remi Aubuchon recently spoke with Dreamwatch Magazine regarding the new Caprica series. The story comes to us from the SciFi Pulse website. In the interview, the producer addresses the direction for the show, insisting that Caprica will defintely stand on its own when compared to Battlestar Galactica.

"I had pitched a story to NBC/Universal Studios independent of Battlestar (an allegorical story about slavery with robots) and Ron [Moore] and David [Eick] were considering a prequel, but were obviously busy with their obligations on the current show so the studio suggested we meet. We hit it off big - time and within a couple of months, the three of us had worked out the concept, took it to Sci Fi and by January we'd sold it."

In regards to ties with Galactica this series will focus more on a less advanced civilisation, which has only just started to traverse space and has just invented a primitive form of robots called Cylons. The show will only share a few historical elements with the present series of Battlestar.

"In Caprica, William Adama is 11 - years old; most of the characters on Battlestar haven't been born yet! The context of the Battlestar world gives us more storytelling opportunities, at least for fans, because there will be some answers to the burning questions that I have had."

Remi Aubuchon as an individual is someone who hasn't really written much within the Science Fiction genre for Television and some may question his judgement because of this. However Aubuchon insists that this show will be so much more than a Sci Fi series, a genre to itself maybe?

"This is more than a science fiction show. This is a very human story about how out own hubris can lead us to disaster. This is a show that owes itself more to Dallas in some ways than to Star Trek. I feel very equipped. I do have a few credits lurking around that are close; From the Earth to the Moon (which is more science than fiction) and a fantasy pilot for NBC called young Arthur."

One burning question on the lips of many people is the potential for cross over stories. Aubuchon revealed that certain elements have been embedded into the first few episodes of season 3, however the Caprica series for the most part will definitely stand on its own.

"We want Caprica to stand on it's own. We're hoping that people who've never heard of Battlestar Galactica (there must be one or two!) can still watch Caprica and not feel they're out of the loop somehow."

I suppose that if you are a fan of Dallas this is glorious news. Regardless of the specifics of how Caprica will look and feel, these recent comments have been adding some interesting layers to the show. Stay tuned.

New Web Series Called "The Resistance"

The always-informative Unofficial Battlestar Galactica Blog has picked up a story regarding the web-only series (not to be confused with Caprica) of Battlestar Galactica. Here's what the article says:

The most exciting news on this front involved Battlestar Galactica, which airs on the NBC Universal owned Sci Fi Channel. Debuting later this year will be a Web series spin-off for the acclaimed series called Battlestar Galactica: The Resistance. Lasting ten episodes, The Resistance will fill in the gap between season two and the upcoming season three.

The original IGN story can be found here. At the moment a hundred questions regarding BSG come to mind: Another spin-off series? Does this effect the Caprica prequel development? And more importantly, will either David Eick or Ron Moore die from exhaustion next year? I would have posted this sooner, but several things distracted my attention: E3, migrating my computers to Linux, and other real life boring issues. The full interview is worth a read, but unfortunately she dispels very little about the new Caprica series that was not already posted in the preview a few days ago. I have quoted the relevant passages below.

MB: It sounds pretty cool. So I guess the big news this week, out from Battlestar Galactica is about the prequel - the spin-off, Caprica. Have you heard much buzz about that?

GP: I know, I just heard that today, too, from my manager. He said that was in Variety. And Trish Helfin, who plays Number Six, she just sent out an email that she heard from her husband, and it was like, "How the hell do we not know this?" It was a total surprise to me. There was no, "Just so you guys know, we are thinking about doing this, we don't know when it's going to come out." None of that. Not a hint. I was like, "Are they really going to do this? How do I feel about this? Why don't we have any say, or why don't we at least know about it?" So that was very strange.

MB: So how do you feel about it?

GP: Well, one of the things I was wondering is, if it was kind of cheesy to do that already? I thought maybe it was a bit soon or didn't really know how that would fare. But if it's David and Ron doing it again, I know the quality will be really good. I'm actually really curious, and I want to know. . . like, are the Cylons already in that part? Probably not, and I'm actually really curious who they're going to use for casting, if they're going to use any of the same characters. Actually they can't because it's 50 years ago, right? Or fifty years before. I'm really curious to see what they're going to do with it. Lots of times, because the show is so good, sometimes when you hear something really drastic is going to happen - like we had the one year jump ahead in the future, or something like that at the end of Season 2 - there's a lot of raised eyebrows, hesitation, and a lot of doubt. There definitely had to be some script things that were worked around, but it ended up fantastic. And that's kind of making me go, whoa, whoa, whoa, what are they going to do with it. I'm actually really curious to see how it goes.

MB: That's really interesting. I know it had been on the news or anywhere that it was in the works, then yesterday the announcements just started coming out and were picked up everywhere.

GP: It was yesterday? Weird. . . I'm only going to end up feeling not happy if the prequel ends up doing way better than our show. I'll be like, "Wait a second - are you allowed to do that?" If it's better than our show, I guess we'll be riding their coat tails.

I remember watching the mini back when it debuted and thinking she was the weakest link in the acting chain. Grace has really honed in on her talents over the past few years, going far beyond my inital expectations of her acting. While the interview contains mostly information about the Battlestar Galactica series I truly recommend giving it a look-see. The folks at MediaBlvd and bsg-tns.com collectively are one of the best news sources regarding the subject matter. More to report as it come in!

David Eick discusses Caprica

In the part 3 interview with David Eick by iF Magazine, the executive producer of Battlestar Galactica shares some compelling information regarding the spinoff series. Here are the parts that pertain directly to the SCIFI original series titled Caprica:

iF: When do you anticipate going into production on the new CAPRICA series?

EICK: We would need a green light first. But I would imagine, if that happens, then we would be shooting in August. Ron and I started talking about a prequel series right around the time we were breaking the second season. When I did HERCULES with the folks at Renaissance Pictures we had the spin-off XENA ready to accompany the second season of that show. I told Ron since we were getting ready to head into our second season, that so far he and I hadn't had a conversation about a spin-off let alone one ready to go to a company with. We realized if we were going to do a spin-off it would have to come from some place organic, it couldn't just be because we wanted to do one.

iF: What was the genesis for CAPRICA?

EICK: We got to talking about the events that took place before the attack and how you might be able to spin a story or a style of storytelling that would be different from GALACTICA. We wanted something much more romantic, and much more of a soap that dealt with a corporation and the man in charge of that corporation who in a very innocent and idealized way propagated the artificial intelligence technology that would later become [unbeknownst to him and those involved in the series] the Cylons. That was about as far as we got, and we continued along on our merry way doing season two. We finished that and started to work on season three. Along the same time we were introduced by the studio to a gentlemen named Remi Aubuchon, who had a pitch that struck them as having a lot of similarities to the Cylon mythos. Ron and I thought, "well we were never able to make time to pursue that idea we had a year ago. . . maybe this is an opportunity to meld what this guy has with what we had. He could write it and we could develop it with him," and so that's what we did. We were right; his idea was very similar to what we had been talking about. We took some of what we had and some of what he had and he's going to start writing next week.

iF : Is CAPRICA going to air on the SCI FI Channel?

EICK: We put our minds together, put the ideas together, and spruced up a pitch. Then we went into the SCI FI Channel and pitched it to them, they were very enthusiastic and it was very well received. They said, 'we'll buy it. . . go write it' so that is what we are doing.

That was far more information than I was expecting out of the iF magazine interview! Eick also reveals that the concept for the spinoff has been floating around for some time now. Most exciting!

Downloaded Remix Video

While this really does not classify as Caprica news, I think this is one of the best fan-made Battlestar Galactica videos. It comes to us compliments of Youtube.com. You can watch the video from it's source here.

Simply amazing! I'd also like to note one of my theories concerning the new show. I think it is entirely possible that we might see some of the six known Cylons models later on Caprica. It could serve as a means to tie together both shows. Just some healthy speculation.
